Synopsis

Exeter University Theatre Company presents Arthur Miller’s 'The Crucible', a chilling classic of adultery, collective paranoia, retribution and witchcraft, performed by candle light in The Guild Chapel.

Based on the true events of the Salem Witch Trials, the play takes place in a small community where every waking hour is expected to be devoted to the service of God. A group of young girls are caught dancing like heathens in the woods leading to signs of ‘The Devils Work’ being spotted.

Cries of ‘Witchcraft’ suddenly consume the community as mass hysteria takes hold. One by one the blameless victims are torn from their homes and families, culminating in the hanging of 19 people for the crime of ‘Witchcraft’.

In the atmospheric setting of the Guild Chapel, this production presents a damming critique of blind religious fanaticism and the atrocities that it can lead to, whether that is the Salem Witch Trials or September 11th.
