Synopsis

This play is a new piece of student writing, from an Exeter student, set in the woods and fields of the Cotswolds in the 1980s. Roald, Caragh and George are mismatched and reclusive, on the cusp of becoming teenagers and still reluctant to grow up. Their free time is absorbed by the "games"; acts of role playing and imagination that they bring to life around the ruins of an old abbey and its crumbling well. However, this hermetic environment is shattered when a eloquent, yet seemingly mad tramp intrudes upon the games of the children, and seems to take on elements of the stories themselves.

Written by current Exeter student Rob Sherman, he says ‘The God In The Well is at times a fairy-tale, at others social satire, as well as a dark dialogue between the forces of imagination and reason. The story of one fateful weekend in the lives of three headstrong, independent young people, this play asks serious questions of imagination and growing up. Set exclusively in the hermetic environment of an old abbey and its crumbling, mysterious well, we are presented with the border between story and reality, nature and civilisation, as well as childhood and the pain of adulthood.’
