The Miracle Worker is a play set in 1880's America, and follows the true story of Annie Sullivan's journey from Boston to Alabama to "tame" the deaf and blind child Helen Keller, whose behavior borders on Ferrell. In taking on the challenge, Annie faces numerous challenges: overcoming the culture clash of her northern upbringing against the archetypal southern Keller family, the conflict of views between her own strong will and Captain Keller's narrow-mindedness in dealing with women, and the violent nature of the difficult Helen, who resists Annie's schooling at all turns, as well as Annie's coming-to-terms with her disadvantaged past, her own visual weaknesses and the loss of her younger brother, James.  In spite of these, she endeavours to teach Helen the most precious and liberating gift of all: language.
